For years now, people have been saying that video games are the main reason for the increase of shootings in the United States. If people believe that, good for them for believing in something, but it’s like Santa, who makes people feel better because they have something that is good but isn’t real. Video games do not cause violence. And here is why.
Violence has been around since the dawn of man. Do you think that the reason there were the Crusades was because the Pope was playing too many video games? Violence has been a part of human society for a long time, but people are just now thinking that it came around due to the increasing amount of video games with guns in them.
Nathan Gandy, a psychology professor at Crowder, explains. “I don’t believe that they cause violence because a lot of people play video games, and they don’t think about shooting up a school or a mall. They just like the fact that it feels as if they are in war, referring to a shooting game like Call of Duty.”
The rating system is there for a reason. Parents are trying to sue game producers for their game that shouldn’t be for children. When in all reality, the parents bought the game for their child and didn’t do the research prior to purchasing the game.
There are some games that have a lot of violence. And some of those games are not suitable for children of young ages. So that means it falls onto the parent for being educated on what games they buy their kids and know what the game is about
I personally have been playing video games since I was about the age of eight, and I have no signs or any indications of violent behavior. I get frustrated when I lose, but I don’t contemplate shooting up a school because I lost. That would not be an “epic gamer move.”
“Games now are starting to make you think about your choices, and they make you feel bad if you choose the wrong one,” Gandy stated. “If you feel bad for making a bit of computer programing upset imagine how you would feel if you did that in the real world.”
“More aggressive people do prefer the more aggressive games, however,”. Nathan Gandy said. “And if you do buy your child mature rated games, do the research about the game so you aren’t shocked when you watch him or her play the game and you see all the guns and blood on the TV screen.”
Crowder students agree. Anthony Maddox, a student at Crowder who plays video games, “There is no connection between games and violence. Violence has been around forever.”
If nothing changes about the view on video games, then there will be endless debate on if video games do cause violence. It will be an endless cycle that will be a waste of time and a waste of resources.
There are so many different types of games. Some might have violence in them but some have little to none. People trying to say that all video games cause violence is not only a lie, but just a mockery of people’s common sense and judgement.
