Social media, websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. The effects social media has on students is very mixed. Social media causes anxiety, lots of procrastination when unnecessary and lower self-esteem within students.

Other than the negative effects of social media, there are also some pros that come along with it. Such as self-affirmation, stress release, and easier ways to communicate. Communication plays a crucial role in a student’s life, especially if they are in a college far away from family and hometown friends.
There are so many ways to handle social media among students. According to the article from the University of Hawai’i, students must make sure to spend as much time doing work as they would being on their phone and on social media. There are many ways to split their time both ways.
According to Psychreg.org, social media is supposed to help students and guide them through everyday life. Are students using it in a manner that does that? That is a question only they could answer.
Social media empowers everyone including parents, teachers, and students. It is an effective way to share information and build a community. That is what is known as the Empowering Effect.
Students must learn to be mature and in charge of their own time. If they choose to be on social media instead of doing the work that needs to be done for school, then they are the only ones who are at fault. Students can use social media to help them through school and get them through the things they need to get through, but they must be careful and not get distracted while doing so.

Social media can easily empower students or take them down and distract them from missing their work. It is important as a teacher to help students when they need it and to also guide them while they try to use social media to guide them through school and help with all things possible.
