Kaleb Fobair, communication major, tells stories through filmmaking.
What made you pick communication as your major?
I was interested in multimedia. I started making videos and editing and writing. I was going to do graphic design but they got rid of that so I decided to do communications. I wanted to improve my skills in multimedia and really get better at writing, but I’m super interested.
What do you like most so far about being a college student?
The freedom. Coming from high school, like I can walk around to my classes outside, the freedom is nice. I like having three classes a day, I can go home early and just enjoy. As long as I can stay on top of my work, it’s not that bad at all. You can set your own schedule.
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
I like going on adventures, going into town, doing something random. I also like just staying home and listening to music, or sitting down and working on a script for a film. I like to watch a movie, or painting, I like painting.
You mentioned writing scripts and making videos, do you post them online?
Yes. I post them on K&E Studios YouTube channel. It’s a film Studio I made a year ago with one of my best friends, his name is Eric. We started up the channel back in the pandemic just to create funny videos. We started out with a four-part series called “A Quarantine Place”. From there it just turned into something big. I loved filmmaking and I decided I wanted to make more films. I’ve produced a total of two series and four films.
With the videos you make, are you more interested in the acting or the filming, writing and directing part of it?
I’m more interested in the writing and directing of it. I do act in all of them. I do everything, but I’m more interested in telling my story to the audience and getting my idea across. I’m hoping that the audience can see what I’m trying to portray and I can get my message across in my horror films. Deep down in my horror films, there’s a message there and I hope that even if it scares the audience, they’ll see the real meaning.
Who’s your inspiration thematically as far as film goes?
Steven Spielberg or M. Night Shamalan. What’s your favorite movie? “Jurassic Park”, It’s my all-time favorite movie.
What’s the last thing you read and why?
“Dune”, I’m reading it currently. The movie is coming out in October so I wanted to read the book before I saw the movie.
How many subscribers do you have on your YouTube channel and what’s your most popular movie?
Currently, 295. Our most popular film right now is “The Visitors”. It’s a horror film based on aliens. I wrote it in middle school so I went back to revisit the script and turn it into a movie. It’s an hour and ten minutes.
Would you say it’s more horror or sci-fi, what’s it about?
I would call it horror, it’s not a slasher film. It plays on the fear of abduction. Just the way the aliens perceive themselves is that they appear to you in your mind as an illusion. That’s how they come to get you. It’s more of a kind of psychological film. You’re really following this group of characters trying to solve the occurrence of missing person cases happening in this small town. One of their best friends goes missing so they’re trying to solve that mystery.
What made you lean into horror?
There’s just so much you can do with horror. My imagination when I go to make something, it just turns out scary. I have another short film called “Underneath”. It plays with psychological fears, mainly schizophrenia. The character deals with thinking he lives in a haunted house. It’s not haunted though, it’s just his schizophrenia. It has to deal with going through the film wondering if there’s a ghost or not. It deals with fear of the mind and what the mind can do to a person.
