The Roughrider soccer team is now 8-7 overall, 1-4 in Region 16 play, after a 0-1 loss to Oklahoma Wesleyan on Oct. 7.
A score by the Eagles and a miscue by the Roughriders presented a 0-1 score heading into halftime. Oklahoma Wesleyan would keep Crowder from scoring in the second half, despite several opportunities.
Crowder has now lost four out of the last five games since the Sept. 23 matchup against Blue River. Only one point has been scored during each of those games, most of them coming from the opposing teams.
As the Region 16 tournament approaches, Brad Smith, head men’s soccer coach and physical education instructor, believes in order to score more wins, the team needs to figure out a way to get around the opponent.
“We need to figure out a way to score some goals,” Smith said. “We get some chances and we don’t score. That’s the game.”
Evaristo Martinez, freshman midfielder, has the same belief about why his team is not winning more games.
“We do everything except finish,” Martinez explained. “Once we get to the goal, that’s the only one thing we miss.”
Martinez, from Springdale, Ark., stated the focus on the team needs to change in the next two weeks before the playoffs.
“We’re going to have to change playing and focusing on winning,” stated Martinez. “We’re not focusing on winning.”
The team has three more regular season games as they travel to St. Peter’s, Mo. to play St. Charles on Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. They return to Roughrider field in Neosho on Oct. 14 for their final home game of the regular season against Rose State at 4 p.m. The Roughriders will then travel to Tonkawa, Okla. on Oct. 18 to close out the regular season by playing Northern Oklahoma at 2 p.m.
