Local bakery offers sweet relief

The Flour Box Bakery – a namesake local eatery specializing in baked goods and gourmet sandwiches – gives customers a quality, charming experience in local dining. Their name plays on one of Neosho’s recognizable features – having the largest flower box in the nation, the size of a train car. Switching out “flower” for “flour” keeps it homegrown but signals their specialty in baked desserts.

The bakery is a relatively small place nestled in downtown Neosho, but offers an ample menu with coffee, tea, cookies, several desserts and even some sandwiches for those looking for more than a snack. They offer a variety of paninis and sandwiches to complement their baked goods and drinks.

Located on 223 S Wood St. near the Neosho square, the bakery seats only a few dozen customers at full capacity, so at busy times of the day it would be wise to expect a wait, especially given the freshly baked menu items.

The experience was a pleasant one, with amiable and attentive staff, quick service and fresh food. The ham and jalapeño panini was warm and very tasty with plenty of meat and lots of cheese. It makes for a delicious sandwich and goes well with a side of chips.

The apple bread, one of their more popular desserts, was served warm and freshly-baked. It was moist and very delicious – it was apparent they take great care to bake often and plentifully to take care of the needs of their customers.

The prices weren’t cheap, but they weren’t over the top, either. The quality of the food made it well worth the expense. I would certainly recommend the quaint Flour Box Bakery for anyone looking to host a party to fill with desserts, for a quick lunch or even for a snack.

However, like most other businesses, COVID-19 has limited their availability. Flour Box Bakery is currently open for curbside delivered meals only, with orders made over the phone at 417-455-9333. Pending changes during the pandemic, they are open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Their colorful, attractive little dining area is a great spot to pause and socialize, for students to study with hot coffee and some cookies or for someone looking to explore tasty local restaurants. The experience was remarkable, and I wouldn’t hesitate to send my friends to Flour Box Bakery.
