Salman Mostafa is an international honors student who has been nominated for the All USA academic team, meaning he is one of the 100 best community college students in America.
He grew up in Egypt with his father and sisters and moved to Neosho to pursue a college degree. He will graduate in May with degrees in Mathematics and General Studies and plans to continue his education at Emporia State University in Kansas where he plans to major in either mathematics or computer science.
He originally wanted to pursue a general business degree, but discovered the field would be highly competitive for an international student. “My major initially was general business, and then a friend of mine told me general business for international students would be highly competitive and she knew that I like computers so she suggested something in that field. So I looked into computer science and I enjoyed it. But I actually changes it again because I couldn’t graduat with the classes they offer here, so I changed it to mathematics. So it’s mathematics and general studies.” says
Mrs. Suzanne Puckett and Crowder’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) was influential in helping Salman become nominated for the all USA academic team. “I was taking a class with Mrs. Puckett and after class she told me about the Phi Theta Kappa and how they choose two students from each community college and she thought I would be a great candidate for that. I didn’t know what it meant or anything so I said “Okay, I’ll just do the application.” and she said , “I’ll work with you on the application.”
The application, according to Salman, was very long and tedious. It took several days to finish filling out the application.
The process to be nominated is also a long process which took several steps. “It just came about as a kind of side track to the honors program. I was talking to my advisor and she told me Mrs. Puckett is looking for candidates for the honors program so I said ‘Okay, I don’t know what this is, but I’ll go see what it is and she told me that the program actually pays for your tution and I was like, ‘ Okay, I am interested now!’
Salman wants to be able to help people while still earning enough money to travel the world. He wants to go to the Maldives and see the beach and walkway. He wants to go to London and see the Big Ben and to Paris and Spain and several countries in Africa, as well as Peru. “I want to have a job where I have multiple sources of income. I want to write books that I sell online maybe or have income that I don’t have to be in a specific place for where I could be just all around and help people and travel while still getting some income.” says Salman.
