How Covid-19 has shaken the sports world

A good majority of the world is shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak, and everyone has been affected in one way or another. Schools closing, classes going online, businesses going out of business, etc. But what was once a thing people used to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world is now gone too: sports.

Sports fans have been craving sports since they were cancelled. ESPN has been doing re runs of sports games from the past to try to please fans but sometimes its not enough. Professional athletes have spoken out about the absence of sports saying that they miss it more than anything. LeBron James stated, “I don’t think I will ever get closure for this”. LeBron led his Los Angeles Lakers to the top seed in the Western Conference.

A few things that have helped since the day sports left the world was the NFL Draft and The Last Dance, a 10-part documentary about the Chicago Bulls.

The NFL Draft had record breaking numbers for the first day. There were 8.4 million viewers watching. That is an all-time high for the NFL Draft.  Last year there were only 6.2 million people in total over the three days the draft takes place.

The Last Dance is a basketball fan’s dream. A first-hand look into the rise and fall of Chicago Bulls when they ruled the NBA in the 1990s. ESPN stated that it is already the most watched sport documentary in company history at 6.1 million viewers.

I asked fellow Crowder student and avid baseball fan Anthony Maddox how he felt about the absence of sports, he said “The only sport that I follow is professional baseball, and when I heard the season got delayed, I was really upset”.

One thing or another, the human race will prevail like we always do. All things will pass, even these, even thought it feels like it won’t. We are all in these together, and things will get better.
