A new spin on the typical creepy, stalker-based show, YOU brings a lot of twists and turns to the table. The Netflix original has become widely popular since its release due to its shocking originality.
The show holds many plot twists throughout its one season on Netflix that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I found myself biting my fingernails wondering what was going to happen next and how the plot would turn out.
The main character of the show, Joe, played by Penn Badgley, is a handsome bookstore manager with an intriguing mind and a deep admiration for classic books. When a young blonde, Guinevere Beck, played by Elizabeth Lail, walks into his book store, Joe is immediately infatuated with her, possibly as much as one of his beloved books. He begins to follow her around the store, watching everything she does, analyzing every move she is making, and wondering if the love of his life just walked into his life. But how far will he go to know her?
Unlike the typical stalker flick, YOU portrays the stalker having an actual relationship with his victim, and somehow makes you root for the stalker. With 3rd-person narration, we see what is going through the stalker’s mind and why he wants to have a relationship with her so badly.
The show was based on a novel by Caroline Kepnes. YOU aired on Sept. 9, 2018, and in July 2018, the series was renewed for a second season, before the original air date. The series has one season with 10 episodes. The show is rated TV-14.
With the strong sexual content and harsh language, I would not recommend this series for young children. Also, by using a lot of technology and social media sites, the show is obviously aimed toward a younger crowd.
YOU is available on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Vudu. The original network for this series is Lifetime.
