The number one issue for college students is usually finance, so given the opportunity to make money, Crowder students can earn money through jobs on campus, called ‘work study.’ It is a program provided by the Department of Education in which you can sign up for through your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
What does work study provide for students? “It simply provides employment for students,” said Jennifer Mercado, general studies major looking for employment.
Jeffery Elwood, the advisor of graduation transfers and careers, also talks about how work study is filled with, “All kinds of jobs—filing, some like financial aid, admissions…different departments are filled with work study opportunities.”
Work study has been provided for college students ever since the Department of Education provided FAFSA for students.
However, what makes work study so different from actual work outside? Elwood says that, “Jobs outside of campus won’t work with your school schedule when compared to work study here at Crowder where the jobs work around your schedule.” He also mentions the difference in pay where “…outside jobs will pay you more whereas Crowder only pays in minimum wage,” as well as differences in work hours.
Work study can be described as an, “Easy way to get money,” as said by Jennifer Mercado, for students. It is a system that allows students to earn money while to managing to put their education first.
To be chosen for work study, Crowder students must have their FAFSA filled out and before talking with Jeff Elwood, students will have to meet up with the Financial Aid Office to see if their income allows them to qualify for work study. If accepted, students can meet with Elwood to discuss the availability of jobs on campus. Elwood talks about how he will even help students with resumes for jobs outside the campus.
However, if a Crowder student does not qualify for work study; they can visit the Crowder College web page to find other non-work study jobs. These non-work study jobs are especially helpful for international students.
Although many students take up on work study, it is helpful for those that do not make the cut line, or simply cannot, to see Elwood for non-work study jobs.
