Digital Media Student’s Journey to Business Ownership

By Bobbi Gober

Jaelyn Swaffer, Digital Media student, aspires to own a coffee shop someday.

Where did you graduate from high school?
I graduated from Webb City in 2021.

What is your major?
My major is General Studies; however, I am also getting a certificate in Digital Media Marketing.

Why did you choose Digital Media Marketing?
I originally sought out my Digital Media certificate for marketing; however, I have found I am more interested in the graphics side of Digital media marketing.

Where do you work?
I have worked at the Joplin Greenhouse for four years.

What is your favorite drink?
My favorite drink is by far the Lavender Latte. I love anything with lavender in it.

What is your favorite part of the job?
I really enjoy coming up with ideas for our seasonal menus.

If you could choose a job, what would your dream job be?
My dream job is to own my own coffee shop someday.

Where would you like to open your coffee shop?
I would like to open my coffee shop in the Webb City, Joplin area. It is where I grew up, and I feel it has a strong enough customer base to be successful.

How does owning a coffee shop tie into your digital media certificate?
I think a digital media certificate would really help my business grow by learning marketing methods and learning to create graphic content to reach my customers.

If you could look down the road five years from now, where do you see yourself?
I am engaged, so I would really like to see myself having a family and owning a successful coffee shop.
