Crowder College Counseling introduces a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) club. Amanda Hall, Crowder College Counselor, advocates for the idea of “therapy” through RPGs. “RPGs are a great way to build creative problem-solving skills, practice social skills, and work on critical thinking,” said Amanda.
A RPG is a role-playing game in which the players describe their characters’ actions through speech and improvising. The gamemaster (GM) creates the setting and the conflict. While players determine their actions, each choice shapes the direction and outcome of the game. “I’ve played it in high school, being the GM with my friends was my favorite,” said Cole Whitehead.
Whether it’s Dungeons and Dragons, a well-known role-playing game, saving Princess Peach, or fighting the Demogorgon, there are many different genres and settings. “My goal for this club is that it be a fun place for students to grow. No gaming experience is required, but if you’ve enjoyed playing RPGs before, you will probably enjoy this as well,” said Amanda.
The club is currently being put together and looking for participants. If interested, Amanda Hall is located at the Crowder Student Success Center and can be contacted at (417)455-5609 or amandahall@crowder.edu.
