The Black Box Theatre will open March 22-24 with The Shape of Things written by Neil LaBute directed by Natasha Davies-O’Brien. This new facility will service as a rehearsal room, a space for student directed shows, experimental and cutting edge theatre and a classroom.
The Black Box Theatre has a small stage and the audience sits only three feet away. It gives the audience a more intimate and personal experience.
“The reason the director is opening this new setting is to make the audience uncomfortable,” said Sam Hoover, stage manager. “The auditorium would not emphasize the melodrama as much as this new facility.” Hoover also spoke of how it had been, “a several month process” creating and preparing the new theatre.
“It is not about making someone uncomfortable as much as it is about making something visceral, and breaking down personal boundaries,” said Natasha Davies-O’Brien, theatre director. “This play [The Shape of Things] focuses on issues that college students and people often struggle with, it explores parts of our humanity that we do not always want to look at, and why we reinforce social norms.”
The Shape of Things will be March 22-24 at 7 p.m.and 1:30 p.m. for the Saturday matinee. Tickets are $4 with a presented Crowder ID, general admission is $8, seniors are $5 and children are $3.
