Members of the Baptist Student Union (BSU) recently visited Glorieta, N.M. to attend the annual Collegiate Week conference, held from Aug. 3-8.
Each year, college students throughout the country congregate in Glorieta for six days in early August to listen to multiple motivational speakers giving advice to keep religion a top priority in the student’s experience of higher education. Attendees of the conference are also split up into various groups from across the country for multiple workshops throughout the week.
“The goal of the conference is to invite Christian college students or non-Christian college students and it’s a great way to start off the school year fresh,” said Aaron Werner, for the BSU. “A lot of students say they spend their time working a lot in the summertime or doing ministry at different times, so they don’t want students to start the semester already burnt out or empty.”
Werner explained that himself, along with the other students, were able to bond together as a group during the trip. The group encountered multiple activities included a 13 mile hike through nearby mountains, basketball, swimming and other various activities.
“We had a great spiritual experience and a great bonding experience,” Werner said. “We came back and the students were just really excited to start school and what God had in store for them.”
For Gabriel Harraman, sophomore nursing major, the trip taught her that religion in college can help any student with trials that they may face during their experience in the higher education process.
“This trip really opened my eyes to see that religion and college go hand in hand,” Harraman stated. “There are a lot of struggles that college students face that they wouldn’t be able to face without the Lord and being able to pray and just having the accountability from their peers to help them through things in life.”
