Newspaper wins top awards

Crowder College’s student newspaper, the Crowder Sentry, recently won best in state for the community college newspaper division in a contest co-sponsored by the Missouri Press Association and the Missouri Collegiate Media Association. The newspaper also received 2nd place for sweepstakes.

The Sentry also won a “First Place with Special Merit” rating in a national contest sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association based in College Point, New York. In addition, the newspaper was named “Most Outstanding College Newspaper for 2014-15.”

In addition to the print publication, the Crowder Sentry News Network produces a weekly broadcast featured on the www.CrowderSentry.com website as well as online exclusives and social media.

Bailey adviser award

Latonia Bailey, Crowder Sentry advisor, was selected as Missouri’s “Advisor of the Year.”

Latonia Bailey, Goodman, Sentry advisor, won “Adviser of the Year” as a state-wide award.

Also, Liz Spencer, Diamond, photography instructor, won photography awards for her work last year with Missouri Southern State University’s publication, The Chart.

The Crowder Sentry has earned the “Best overall” award five years total: three consecutive years from 2008-2010 and the last two years.

“It is the teamwork of the staff that makes it possible to bring home so many awards,” said Jesse O. Walls, awardee and former editor.

Crowder offers an Associate of Art degree in the areas of journalism and public relations, graphic design and photography.
